SOME BLACK PARENTS SEE PHYSICAL DISCIPLINE AS A DUTY. THE NAACP SHOULDN’T AGREE.
The Washington Post
By Stacey Patton
June 22, 2012

This debate — over whether Dollar was appropriately disciplining his daughter or abusing her, and whether physical violence is needed to rear a child properly — is an old one in the black community. The fact that this debate is still happening shows what little progress black Americans have made in peacefully teaching their children right from wrong. For some, beating children is a legacy of having been abused for centuries by a racist society.

HOW WE GOT TO FERGUSON
THE DAILY BEAST
By David Masciotra
Aug. 8, 2014

Stacey Patton almost invents a new genre in her book of memoir and history, That Mean Old Yesterday. A victim of child abuse turned advocate for the abused, Patton presents an air-tight case that corporal punishment in black families goes directly back to the physical abuse slave owners used to discipline, punish, and control slaves. She also details the societal violation of childhood robbery.

CHARLES BARKLEY DEFENDS IT, CRIS CARTER DECRIES IT, BUT STUDIES SHOW SPANKING CAN CHANGE BRAIN CHEMISTRY
THE WASHINGTON POST
By Soraya Nadia McDonald
Sept. 15, 2014

Said researcher Stacey Patton: “Children who are spanked don’t have the option to flee or fight – they must submit to the pain and violence without grabbing, blocking, or defending against the assault to their body. Corporal punishment triggers the release of cortisol.”

Salon
By Kirsten West-Savali
Sept. 17, 2014

“Black America really needs to evolve its conversation on this kind of domestic violence because the powers that be are aware of our attachment to and celebration of this practice and they are using it against us to feed the prison pipeline and the foster care industry,” says Dr. Stacey Patton, Senior Reporter at The Chronicle of Higher Education, anti-spanking advocate and founder of Spare The Kids.  “So as we sit on Facebook and other social media sites waging this debate, joking about the issue, and lying about how hitting children is responsible and loving Black parenting, laws and policies are being put into place to trip us up.”
